Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy | Born February 3, 1809. Died November 4, 1847. | "The Glorious Boy." Born in Hamburg, | his father being a wealthy banker. As a child | he studied the piano, violin, composition, drawing, | French, English, Greek; was a gay, spirited boy, fond | of all sports and games. At ten he played in public, | and composed pieces which were performed at home. | He was very quick at playing music at sight. |
At fifteen he began to publish his compositions. | Later he visited England and Scotland and became very | popular with the English people. In 1835 he became | director of the famous Gewandhaus concerts in Leipsic, | and married there in 1837. In 1841 he was appointed | director of music in Berlin. In 1842 he organized the | great conservatory of music at Leipsic. |
He was a man of many talents; a poet and a painter | as well as a musician. He composed rapidly, corrected | carefully, and often wrote off from memory lost music. | His overtures to "Midsummer Night's Dream," | "Ruy Blas," his oratorios, "St. Paul," and "Elijah," | and his symphonies are among the great works in music. | His "Songs Without Words" are great favorites. |
